One of the most notable aspects of its history is its connection to the first European exploration of the West Coast. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer, landed at what is now known as Point Loma in 1542, marking it as the first European landing on the West Coast of the present-day United States.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Point Loma served as an active shipping port. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, it hosted numerous Spanish and U.S. military bases, training grounds, and forts. In the early 20th century, it was the site of Lomaland, a Theosophical community founded by Katherine Tingley after the death of Theosophical Society founder Helena Blavatsky. This community, known for its unique architecture and lifestyle, was an important cultural center in San Diego between 1900 and 1920. It is now the site of Point Loma Nazarene University.

The natural geography of Point Loma includes the Sunset Cliffs along the ocean, known as the Point Loma Formation, which contains fossils from the Late Cretaceous period. This formation represents one of the few sites containing dinosaur fossils in California. Today, Point Loma is known for its tide pools, sandstone cliffs, Cabrillo National Monument, and as a location for recreational and cultural activities, including Liberty Station, a former Navy training base turned shopping and arts destination.
